Car wouldn’t select gear at all. Coasted into the median to stop and restart the car when it wouldn’t start again.
I’m expecting the worst right now, transmission rebuild/replace. Not sure if it’s worth keeping the car anymore.

Where are you at? Did you post from there? Do you need help getting her out of the road? Ride home? AAA tow?

The universe is cruel and strange. I’m replacing the distributor and coil hopefully tomorrow. Maybe you’ll have something you can slog around in.

No-start rarely has anything to do with the transmission. What’s it doing/not doing?

I’ve never worked on an automatic before, but if the trans is on the fritz, would the car start if it didn’t think it was in P?

Okay so the non-starting thing was my fault. It was still in drive and I was too rattled to notice. Still it won’t select gear and I’m having it towed to a dealership.

Well yeah there’s that, but I mean that when you have a transmission that’s suspected to be in need of a rebuild, the fault is typically a driveline or valve body concern. Whereas the lockout controls that can keep a car from starting are usually much more accessible than that. Like a range sensor, which in many (not all) cases is mounted to the outside of the case. Or a shifter assembly. Or in the case of a manual transmission, a clutch switch. Things like that can keep a car from cranking over.

In seriousness tho, hopefully it’s a cheap fix... :(

Oh man that sucks. I hope it’s something dumb like a $10 switch. This happened to me once in our company’s ford exploder. The transmission was kaput. The truck was high miles so we just junked it. Seems like it’s a nice mustang otherwise, I’d be inclined to fix it and keep driving it.

I would think used transmissions would be plentiful and cheap. Why not swap one and drive on. I assume a swap is less than a day.. What year, engine and model is it?
TheHondaBro
> RacinBob
08/08/2017 at 13:59 | 0 |
Ugh, more than I’m willing to spend. The car’s only worth about $4500 in working condition. If I’m going to spend half of that on a transmission with the stipulation that I’d have to put it in myself, not sure if it’d even be worth it, even if I’ll get a mechanically-sound car afterwards.
I don’t know. I guess for $2000 I can’t get a car even close to my Accord in terms of practicality and reliability. It shouldn’t be too hard to drop the transmission and put a new one in, right?

Very true. I’ve never been in desperate need for a car so I can be picky, which leads to being irritated.
You should also look in your area for an auto broker. You generally get a very good car for the money you spend. I know you may like looking for cars, but when it comes to dealing with the idiots and making sure the car is good it may be nice to leave it to someone who does it for a living.
